The Himba Tribe
The Himba tribe, native to Namibia’s remote Kunene region, are renowned for their striking appearance, cultural resilience, and deep connection to nature. Known for their iconic red ochre body paint and intricate hairstyles, Himba women symbolize beauty, heritage, and identity through their adornments. As semi-nomadic pastoralists, they rely on cattle herding and traditional practices passed down through generations. Living in harmony with their harsh desert environment, the Himba preserve ancestral wisdom, spirituality, and community values. Visiting the Himba offers a rare glimpse into an ancient way of life, where traditions thrive despite modern influences, showcasing Africa’s rich cultural tapestry.
I am Tjingi Tjinginda
I am a Himba and was born in a small Himba village called Okamue, 60 km north from Opuwo. Here my parents raised me and my older brother and three younger sisters. When I was 12 years old I decided on my own to go to a mobile school in a nearby village. My parents were not so happy about this, but I did not give up on my dream. I then moved to a normal primary school in Ohandungu and then attended high school in Opuwo. After high school I started to ask nearby lodges to recommend their guests to go with me to visit the Himba, and I took a course in tourism to become a licensed tourist guide.
I am proud to be a Himba and I invite you to visit the Himba together with me. I care deeply about our culture and believes and am passionate about sharing this with visitors to my beautiful country Namibia. I bring visitors who look for a truly authentic experience to a few small authentic Himba hamlets near my hometown, where the Himba community is still living the same way as their ancestors did. By occasionally bringing some visitors to their homes I can contribute to their well-being and provide an experience which is not only appreciated by my guests, but also the Himba we visit.
Come with me, for a truly unforgettable and authentic experience that will be a highlight of your visit to Namibia!
Kind regards, Tjingi
VISIT AUTHENTIC HIMBA WITH ME
The Himba hamlets I usually visit are NOT a tourist destination, but really authentic and traditional Himba communities. In the hamlet I will introduce you to the Himba families and show you around and explain you about the traditional Himba culture and way of living. We will also sit down together with the Himba family members, who will also explain about their daily activities and answer any questions you may have. I’m sure they will also ask you questions, as the Himba appreciate outsiders visiting their place and are always curious about their visitors.
The Himba do not ask visitors to pay, so we will bring some basic food and other supplies as gifts. You will have time to explore the hamlet and surroundings. You are also free to take photos or film the Himba as much as you want, as long as you are respectful. Some of the Himba we visit may be shy and not used to cameras!

WHAT MY GUESTS HAVE TO SAY
I had visited the Himba before, in a small village near Puros. Although it looked as an authentic village, there were only a few women and children and not much activity. There was a handicraft and souvenirs for sale, so they must have regular visitors. This time we wanted a more authentic and immersive experience with the Himba, and also stay a night. After some online research I found Tjingi, and from some reviews it was clear he was the right guide for us. And wow, did he deliver! He brought us to an incredibly authentic Himba village, with a few absolutely lovely families. They welcomed us with open arms, proudly showing their way of life. There were a lot of kids, and it was obvious they did not see many tourists, if at all. They were initially very shy, but also as curious about us as we were about them.Eventually the ice broke and we had a great time together, playing games and enjoying snacks together. In the evening the adult men joined us at our camp fire. They told us incredible stories, some in the form of beautiful songs. All together an unforgettable experience and a highlight of our 4 week trip through Namibia! Make time to visit the Himba with Tjingi, and stay a night! You won't regret!

Tjingi speaks English well and is a local Himba man. Most of his regular clients are anthropologists whom he takes out for weeks on end. He listened to us when we explained what we were looking for in a visit and he did a great job of explaining things during the course of the visit.

We had a great excursion together with our guide Tjingi. What an impression this made on us. We had the pleasure of spending 24 hours with the Himba. The children had never seen tourists before (or in a long time). They were a bit shy at first, but then they soon came to 'admire' us and never left our side. We experienced how the Himba live and get through the day. It is nice to have Tjingi as an interpreter so that you can also talk to them. We taught the children all kinds of simple games such as jumping rope and tic-tac-toe. They loved it. Furthermore, they were very happy with the simple gifts we brought such as water, oil, bread and some sweets.
Thanks again to Tjingi who arranged everything perfectly.

We went to a village situated 40km far from opuwo with Tjingi and what a day! It was wonderful, exactly as I expected. We could have time to exchange with the Himba, playing with children. He taught us a lot about their way of life.
